Major Activities

Developing cutting-edge chemical business in core growth industries

In the Performance Chemicals Business Unit, we mainly handle performance chemicals that serve as bridges between the chemical industry and other growth industries, and seek to develop new business enabling us to leverage our chemical business strengths. We aim to build our presence in four business areas: (1) performance materials in the growth businesses of automobiles, office devices and consumer electronics; (2) environmental chemicals business, which aims to enhance our position in the areas of new energy and environmental protection; (3) agricultural chemicals business to meet rising demand for foods; and (4) advanced materials business, which provides solutions for the growing electronics industry.

Expanding business by enhancing cooperation with strategic partners

Chemical manufacturing is a growth area in which we use finite resources to supply all industries with increasingly sophisticated raw materials. In automobile business, for instance, we are extending our global distribution and logistics network in all areas from resins and compounding through to molding and parts manufacturing. In new energy and the environment, we are developing business all along the photovoltaic cell value chain and in manufacturing and distribution of environmentally friendly green chemicals. We are also providing solutions for meeting global food demand, which is projected to continue to rise. Our focuses in this area include agricultural chemicals business at Mitsui Agriscience International (MASI) in Europe, fertilizer sales business at Mitsui Bussan Agro Business in Japan, sophisticated and integrated global distribution of sulfur, and the ammonia manufacturing business of Kaltim Pacifik Ammoniak (KPA) in Indonesia. Through such initiatives, we are playing our part in securing the raw materials needed for fertilizers. And in electronics, our role extends beyond supplying raw materials and parts to Japanese flat panel display manufacturers to include the provision of supply chain management (SCM) and electronics manufacturing service (EMS) solutions.



Shared domestic distribution platform for the Chemical Segment

At this business unit, we are also primarily responsible for operating the shared domestic distribution platform of the two business units in Mitsui's Chemical Segment. We intend to enhance our drive to meet structural changes in the chemicals market, in cooperation with our distribution subsidiaries, such as Mitsui Bussan Plastics Trade, which mainly handles synthetic resins, Mitsui Chemicals, which deals in raw materials for solvents, paints and urethane, and Mitsui Bussan Agro Business, which covers fertilizers and agricultural chemicals.
