In the Transportation Logistics Business Unit, we have been responsible for providing logistics services for the activities of Mitsui for many years. We also develop our own original logistics services in all segments of the logistics field, using our Japanese and overseas network. In addition to providing core logistics services in Japan and overseas, we are seeking to provide logistics services with high added value that integrate our logistics expertise with our capabilities in insurance and finance.

Offering the best logistics solutions in various fields in Japan and overseas

Our Tri-Net brand is meeting logistics needs throughout the world, with core operating companies in the United States, Europe, Asia, China and Japan. We are enhancing our network and increasing the sophistication of our logistics infrastructure by investing in logistics facilities, ports and other infrastructure in emerging countries. As international procurement and product distribution becomes increasingly complex, we are using our rich track record in proposing logistics improvements to offer the best logistics solutions, and putting them into practice in the form of third-party logistics (3PL). We are also seeking to use IT to achieve more advanced logistics. Specific areas of focus include improving the efficiency of logistics management and increasing traceability, through use of the MLX-F system, which enables integrated management of information on sales, purchasing and logistics, and RFID technology, an identification technology using wireless IC tags. In warehousing and distribution, we are demonstrating our expertise in a broad spectrum of fields, including high-mix, low-volume distribution and chemical product distribution. We are also focusing on green distribution. One example is our initiative to reduce CO2 emissions through the use of barge transportation in Tokyo Bay.

Pursuing business through multifaceted alliances in core fields

In addition to our Japanese and overseas logistics solutions, we have developed a core business that combines logistics with insurance and finance. In insurance, we are involved in comprehensive risk management. Areas of business include direct sales of automobile insurance through Mitsui Direct General Insurance Co., Ltd., insurance agency business, and reinsurance business for dispersing risk at the time of underwriting. We were an early mover in the field of logistics REITs and are now offering high added value logistics solutions that also include solutions for liquefying REIT properties. All of such business combines the logistics knowledge and financial expertise we have acquired through long years of business. By forming and building on various partnerships and using our insurance and financial capabilities and new technologies such as RFID in addition to our logistics network and solutions technologies, we are developing logistics services with strong added value.
